HDFC Bank’s net profit in the September quarter, the first since its merger with its mortgage-lending parent, Monday beat estimates on a surge in treasury gains and retail loans, but a higher inherited cost base from the home-loan pioneer crimped profitability at India’s only lender with a market capitalisation in excess of $100 billion.
The Ratan Tata Endowment Foundation has recently bought minor stakes in Tata Digital and Tata Technologies, marking the first investments by the group’s recently established charitable arm.
In a ruling that will potentially bring additional tax liabilities of about $1 billion on the telecom sector this fiscal year alone, impacting operator cash flows, the Supreme Court on Monday held that licence fees payable by the telcos will be treated as entirely “capital in nature”.
