India recorded a dominating seven-wicket win against Bangladesh in the 17th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 on Thursday, October 19. Bangladesh managed to put 256 runs on the scoreboard while batting first but brilliant knocks from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill helped India record their fourth consecutive win in the tournament.
Gill scored his maiden World Cup fifty but Kohli stole the headlines with his 48th ODI century. Kohli remained unbeaten and finished the game with a six to complete his 78th international century. Kohli also completed 26000 runs in international cricket and also claimed the Player of the Match award.
The Men in Blue joined New Zealand in the points table with eight points from four games in their bid to secure a spot in the semifinal. Shakib Al Hasan-less Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first at Pune's Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium.
Bangladesh started positively with openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Dad scoring impressive fifties. Kuldeep Yadav gave India a breakthrough in the 15th over with Tanzid's wicket and then the bowlers dominated the game. Ravindra Jadeja emerged as India's best bowler as he picked up two crucial wickets while conceding just 38 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj also took two wickets each to help India restrict Bangladesh to 258/6 in 50 overs. Litton top-scored with 66 runs off 82 balls while Mahmudullah contributed a crucial 46 runs off 36 balls while batting at the no.7 position.
Rohit and Shubman produced another impressive start for India by smashing 88 runs for the first wicket. Rohit scored 48 runs off 40 balls to go top in the scoring chart of the tournament while Gill scored 53 runs to continue his sensational form in 2023.
Virat Kohli entered the field after Rohit's dismissal in the 13th over and kept India in control with crucial partnerships with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. Iyer scored 19 runs before getting dismissed while attempting a six over the mid-on in the 30th over.
Kohli and Rahul avoided further wickets as India reached closer to the target. Rahul remained unbeaten on 34 runs while Kohli accelerated his innings to clinch a brilliant century. He finished the game with a huge six off Nasum Ahmed in the 42nd over and remained unbeaten on 103 off 97 balls.
