That’s it from us for today!!! An excellent start for India beating favourites Australia by six wickets. However, at 2-3, it looked extremely tough.
We will be back for India vs Afghanistan clash on October 11. Until then Ciao!!!
Rohit Sharma said: Good feeling to come out on top. (Bowling and fielding) Magnificent. Especially the fielding. The fielding was something we really put our effort on. It was a great effort. In conditions like this it can be tough sometimes. We knew there would be assistance for everyone. Seamers got reverse, spinners bowled in nice areas. All in all a great effort. (Nervous at 3 for 2?) Yes I was to be honest. You don’t want to start like that when chasing a target. Credit to Australia, but some loose shots there as well. But that happens, you want to get off the mark and score quickly in the powerplay. Hats off to Virat and KL – the way they stuck out there to create a match-winning partnership. (Adapting to next surface?) That will be the biggest challenge moving forward because we will play in different conditions. Might have to change combinations too and as a team we are prepared to do that.”
Pat Cummins said: (How far short was the score?) Atleast 50 odd. Tough trying to defend 200. (Challenges of batting?) Really good bowling attack. And facing spinners was tough. Was the kind of wicket you had to get yourself in. (Kohli drop) I’ve already forgotten about it! Not ideal, especially for his calibre. Four down for 10 would’ve been amazing but wasn’t to be. (Hazlewood) Always poses questions with the ball. (What to tell the team before next game?) Have to have a review. Obviously a tough surface. Its just one game out of nine, no need to dwell over that. No regrets [about toss.]
Virat Kohli joins Rohit Sharma in the list for the most 50+ scores for India in ODI World Cup history
“There weren’t a lot of conversations with Kohli. I had just taken a shower and was hoping to put my feet up for half an hour after the fielding innings, but I had to come in. Virat said that I should play like Test cricket for a bit. Happy to play this for the team. There was a bit of help for the fast bowlers early on. Towards the end, the dew played a bit of a part for them. It was still two-paced. It wasn’t a great wicket to bat on, neither was it too difficult. I think it was a good cricket wicket, that’s what you get in South of India especially in Chennai. (Last shot) I hit it too well. I wanted to get a hundred by going four and six. Hopefully some other time I can get it.”
Virat Kohli and KL Rahul’s 165-run stand for the fourth wicket is India’s highest partnership against Australia in the ODI World Cup for any wicket.

Australia – 140/6 after 36 overs. Kuldeep Yadav bowls out settled Glenn Maxwell with a beautiful delivery. Australia are in big trouble to finish high in Chennai.
Australia – 138/5 after 35 overs. India remain in control as Australia look for some stability in the middle overs. Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green remain in the defensive mode but are rotating a strike well.
Ravindra Jadeja takes his third wicket of the game as Australia lose Alex Carey on a duck. Aus – 119/5 after 29.4 overs.
Ravindra Jadeja picks his second wicket in the form of Marnus Labuschagne. A thick edge lands in KL Rahul’s gloves. Australia down for four wickets with 119 runs on the scoreboard.
Ravindra Jadeja denies Steve Smith his fifty with an absolute ripper. Australia down to three wickets with just 110 runs on the scoreboard after 27.1 overs. Smith scored 46 off 71 balls, Glenn Maxwell joins Labuschagne in middle.

What a catch!!!! Virat Kohli flies to his left and picks up a brilliant catch to send back Mitchell Marsh. Jasprit Bumrah the bowler to draw first blood!!

Not a great start for Siraj as Warner smashes his first ball for four
A tight over from Jasprit Bumrah! Australia off the mark with a run scored
All set then! Probably the biggest opening match in the World Cup for India in recent times. Chasing in Chennai might be a challenge as Rohit Sharma’s body language indicated after he lost the toss but the only thing that can stop India from chasing a big score is regular wickets from bowlers. Something what New Zealand did against England in the opener.

We are just under five minutes away from the toss and the fans are shouting their voices out and the stands are filling up
India vs Australia is an epic rivalry of quality cricket being played on the 22-yards. From 1983 to 2019, the two have played some great matches. The BGT contests have been second to none. More on the rivalry here
The MA Chidambaram pitch generally favours the spin bowlers due to its slowness in the surface. A team batting second can find it hard to chase down the target.
With Gill ruled out, Ishan shall open the innings. Rahul is a certainty in the middle and then comes the question of who between SKY or Iyer should play. Iyer looks ahead.
Okay, so new coming in that Shubman Gill has not travelled with the Indian team for the match. This all but confirms that he won’t be participating in the match today. A big loss?
After four years of that heart-break in Manchester, the Indian cricket team will kickstart its campaign in another World Cup. This time the World Cup returns home. India is hosting the ODI World Cup alone for the first time after co-hosting it before. The big rivalry – India vs Australia will hit life into this World Cup as the two giants face each other in their respective curtain raisers.
