Gujarat tightens security at borders with poll-bound Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh | Here's why – India TV News

Ahmedabad: In view of next month’s assembly elections in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat has tightened security along its borders to maintain law and order, said officials said Saturday. The primary objectives of these measures are to prevent the smuggling of illegal weapons, narcotics, counterfeit currency, and other prohibited items, as well as to monitor and deter anti-social elements.

According to an official government release, a total of 48 interstate checkposts have been set up across the districts in Gujarat that share borders with the neighbouring states. These checkposts have been put in place to curb the movement of antisocial elements and to prevent the illegal transportation of weapons, drugs, counterfeit Indian currency notes, and other prohibited items.
Five districts in Gujarat, namely Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Arvalli, Dahod, and Mahisagar, share their borders with the state of Rajasthan and two districts, Dahod and Chhota Udepur, have borders with the state of Madhya Pradesh.
On the direction of the Director General of Police (Law and Order), Shamsher Singh, a total of 48 checkposts have been established. Among these, 37 checkposts are positioned along the border with Rajasthan, while the remaining 11 are situated along the border with Madhya Pradesh.
The police personnel stationed at the borders will maintain vigilant surveillance over the activities of criminals and antisocial elements, with a primary objective of preventing the illicit transportation of prohibited items, including illegal weapons and drugs.
The Collectors of Gujarat districts that share borders with the neighbouring states have received instructions to rigorously enforce the prohibition of the sale of alcohol or any other intoxicating substances on the polling day and the day preceding it, as per section 135 (c) of the Representation of the People Act.
Gujarat has a strict law prohibiting the sale, manufacture, and consumption of alcohol.
As per the announcement made by the Election Commission of India (ECI), assembly elections will be held in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram between November 7-30. The counting of votes for all the states will be done on December 3. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will vote on November 17 and November 25, respectively.
