Cyclone Tej: Very severe cyclonic storm likely to further intensify today, says IMD – India TV News

Cyclone Tej: VSCS (very severe cyclonic storm) Tej lay centered at 2330 IST of October 21 (Saturday) over SW Arabian Sea about 330 km ESE of Socotra (Yemen), 690 km SSE of Salalah (Oman), and 720 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen), said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday. The cyclone is very likely to intensify further into an extremely severe cyclonic storm in the forenoon of October 22, it added. Meanwhile, the cyclonic storm will not have any impact on Gujarat. A low-pressure area over the southeast and southwest Arabian Sea has developed into a depression and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 21 morning, the IMD had said in a statement earlier. According to the formula followed for naming cyclones in the Indian Ocean Region, it will be called 'Tej'. It is predicted to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm on Sunday and move towards the south coasts of Oman and adjoining Yemen, according to the IMD. Cyclones, however, change their course sometimes.

The depression over the Bay of Bengal may become a low-intensity cyclonic storm by October 24, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday. The depression lies centred around 610 km south of Odisha’s Paradip, the IMD said in a bulletin. “The system is likely to further intensify into a deep depression over the next 24 hours. It will move northwestwards in the subsequent 12 hours and then move towards the Bangladesh-West Bengal coasts in the following three days,” it added. “Though there is a possibility of the formation of a cyclonic storm, it is likely to be a very weak system. It will have a marginal impact on Odisha, bringing in light to moderate rain. The system at the sea will be around 200 km from the state’s coast,” weather scientist Umashankar Dash of the Regional Meteorological Centre told media.
ESCS “Tej” lay centered at 1730 hrs IST of 22 Oct SW Arabian Sea about 90 km north-northeast of Socotra (Yemen), 410 km south of Salalah (Oman) and 390 km SE of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). Very likely to move NW and cross Yemen coast close to Al Ghaidah (Yemen) around  24 Oct as VSCS

As one cyclone is moving ahead in Arabian Sea, another is yet to be formed in the central Bay of Bengal. Currently, depression formed over the west-central Bay of Bengal is likely to move northwestwards during the subsequent 3 days.
The brewing cyclone in Arabian sea is rarely going to impact Gujarat’s coastal area. The weather in the state is likely to remain dry, said IMD.

Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General, IMD, said, “A depression has been formed in the Bay of Bengal. The depression will intensify into a deep depression and by tomorrow it may intensify further and become a cyclone storm…between 23-25th October, in Coastal Odisha and West Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is expected…sea condition is very rough…it is not safe for the fishermen and ships so we are continuously issuing warnings, fishermen are not supposed to go to sea and those who’re in the sea must come back immediately”.
