Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan’s love story, which began on the set of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film Guddi, was a tale of two hearts intertwining. The couple’s journey led them to a traditional Bengali wedding on June 3, 1973, and recently, while hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati Season 15, Amitabh Bachchan shared a delightful anecdote from their special day.
During a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati 15, the megastar revealed an interesting tidbit about his wedding, particularly regarding the customary ‘topor.’ In Bengali Hindu weddings, the topor, a conical headgear, is traditionally worn by grooms. This headgear is gifted by the bride’s family, and Amitabh had his reservations about wearing it.
Sharing his reluctance to wear the ‘topor’, Amitabh said, “This conical cap is worn during a wedding in Bengal. You all know that I have a connection with Bengal. I don’t know why they made this and made people wear it. I didn’t like it so I asked Jaya’s family members and said ‘I apologise, I will marry your daughter, Jaya, but please don’t make me wear this topi’.”
Before their marriage, Jaya Bachchan was already a renowned actress. However, Amitabh Bachchan had one condition regarding Jaya’s career. In a podcast hosted by their granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, Jaya revealed that Amitabh had told her, “We had decided we will marry in October, because by then my work would have reduced. But he had told me, ‘I definitely don’t want a wife who will be 9 to 5. Please work, but not every day. You choose your projects and work with the right people.”
On the professional front, Amitabh Bachchan’s upcoming projects include filmmaker Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, in which he stars alongside Prabhas and Deepika Padukone. He will also feature in Ribhu Dasgupta’s courtroom drama, Section 84. He will also be seen in Tiger Shroff’s Ganapath.
