India are on the verge of claiming their much-awaited third World Cup but face a litmus test in the form of Australia, who have beaten them eight out of 13 times in the history of the tournament, including a heartbreak in the 2003 final, the pain of which still writ large among many Indian fans.
However, there has been clear daylight between India and the rest of the teams regarding consistency and performance at this World Cup. Having remained unbeaten to enter the final, the hosts have most of their bases covered without any acute chink in the armour.
Australia lost to India and South Africa early in their campaign before bouncing back with eight consecutive victories, including a low-scoring cliffhanger versus South Africa in the semi-final. Their record five title wins (in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015) make them well-accustomed to the pressure of a final.
