The constituents of Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) have agreed on a seat-sharing pact for Maharashtra, the state that accounts for a total of 48 Lok Sabha constituencies, a media report said on January 9.
The Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT), headed by former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, will contest on 20 seats each, Zee News reported.
While the Sena had demanded 23 seats in the early set of negotiations, the party has now agreed to field candidates from 20 Lok Sabha segments, the report said, citing sources.
Moneycontrol could not independently verify the development. An official announcement was yet to be made by any of the INDIA constituents.

While the Opposition alliance members would be meeting in New Delhi at 4 pm on January 9 to discuss the seat-sharing details, the Zee News report claimed that an agreement has already been reached. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction headed by veteran Sharad Pawar would be contesting in six seats, as per the seat-sharing formula, it claimed.
VBA to be included?
The Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), headed by BR Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar, is yet to officially join the INDIA coalition. However, the report claimed that the VBA would be included in the alliance in Maharashtra, and has been offered two seats under the seat-sharing pact.
The VBA, which has a base among the state’s Dalit community, had contested in alliance with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in the last general elections. Although the party failed to win any of the Lok Sabha seats, it was considered to have dented the Congress’ prospects in a number of constituencies.
How Maharashtra’s Opposition performed in 2019 polls?
The Congress and the undivided NCP, which were then leading the Opposition front in Maharashtra, were decimated in 2019. The NCP could manage to win only 4 seats, the same as it won in 2014, whereas, the Congress’ tally dropped from 2 to 1 seat.
While VBA had drawn a blank, its ally AIMIM had made its parliamentary debut from the state, with journalist-turned-politician Imtiaz Jaleel winning the crucial Aurangabad seat.
The undivided Shiv Sena, which was then part of the ruling alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had won 18 seats.
Notably, the Sena was split in June 2022, with the faction headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde aligning with the BJP. The majority of Sena legislators and lawmakers switched to the Shinde-led faction, even as Thackeray claims to have the support of the bulk of party’s cadre.

Why Maharashtra is crucial in 2024 race?
Maharashtra, with 48 seats, accounts for nearly nine percent of the total seats in the Lok Sabha. The BJP, in the last two elections, has been winning nearly half of the state’s total parliamentary segments. In the 2019 elections, it had won 23 seats.
The Congress, which is considered as the de-facto leader of the INDIA bloc, is hopeful of denting the BJP’s prospects in Maharashtra in a bid to prevent Narendra Modi to secure a third term in power.
The performance of Sena (UBT) is crucial if the Opposition alliance is to succeed, analysts say. The NCP led by Pawar is considered to have weakened as a bulk of the party’s legislators have switched to the faction headed by his nephew Ajit Pawar, who has sided with the BJP, they point out.
